| TIPS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS INFECTION |
 |
- Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn.
- Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long
periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active.
- Use mosquito repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, according to directions, when
you are outdoors.
- Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants.
- Install or repair window and door screens so that mosquitoes cannot get indoors.
- Reduce the mosquito population around your home and property, by reducing or eliminating
all standing water:
- Remove all discarded tires on your property. Used tires have become an important
source of mosquito breeding in the nation.
- Keep rain gutters clean and free of clogs.
- Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers and open garbage cans that are kept outdoors.
- Make sure roof gutters drain properly, and are free from clogs.
- Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
- Change the water in birdbaths weekly.
- Clean vegetation and debris from edges of ponds.
- Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs.
- Drain water from pool covers.
- Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
- Empty water from flower pots, pet food and water dishes, buckets, barrels, and cans.
