SOUTH DAKOTA FACTS: A new licensing system in allows South Dakota vehicle owners to keep
their plates when buying a different vehicle. In the past, the plates stayed with
the vehicle, but now they follow the owner. The change was implemented in 2008.
Pennington County is one of the first counties to offer a self-service terminal to assist the public in renewing their county registrations.
The SST is located in the Public Safety Building’s main entrance located at 300 Kansas City Street in Rapid City and can be utilized to renew
ANY county registration across South Dakota. The 24/7 machine is available 365 days of the year.
Access to the terminal is fast and efficient. The touch screen prompts will walk you through the whole process. If you are in possession of
a valid South Dakota driver’s license or South Dakota identification card and are the owner listed on the title of the vehicle, you may
use the terminal.
Have a valid South Dakota Driver’s license OR a South Dakota State issued identification card.
You can renew your registration as early as 90 days prior but no later than 30 days after the vehicle's renewal expiration date.
A $2.00 per registration fee is charged.
Business's must provide their FEIN number.
