Pennington County is located in the southwest portion of South Dakota, and is comprised of 2,776 square miles of forests, prairies, badlands and farm and grazing lands.

Transportation Improvement Plan.
Major Projects
  • Rochford Road

    The Pennington County Board of Commissioners have selected HDR Engineering, Inc. out of Rapid City, SD to complete an Environmental Impact Statement for the reconstruction of Rochford Road from Rochford South to Deerfield Road. HDR Engineering, Inc. will be developing a website for the project as well as seeking public comments in the near future. Once the website is developed and available, we will post a link to it here.
  • Reservoir & Long View Road

    This project is substantially complete. Final asphalt surfacing on the project is complete. Two-way traffic has been restored on Reservoir Road and permanent pavement marking is complete. Limited amounts of sidewalk and ADA ramps still remain and are scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2011. Final surface restoration as well as sod placement are also scheduled for the spring of 2011.
  • Sheridan Lake Road

    The reconstruction of Sheridan Lake Road from Alberta Drive to State Highway 385 is under design by Ferber Engineering. Preliminary plans have been completed. The South Dakota Department of Transportation is developing an Environmental Assessment for the project. Upon completion of the Environmental Assessment, a public meeting to review the plans and accept comments will be scheduled.
Maintenance Projects
  • Asphalt overlay on Spring Creek Road from Arena Drive to State Highway 79, estimated cost $222,000.

  • Asphalt overlay on 173rd Avenue from Interstate 90 to the county line, estimated cost $262,000.

  • Chip seal approximately 29 miles of various county roads throughout the county, estimated cost $550,000.

  • Crush and produce 120,000 tons of gravel and 1,000 tons of rip rap for various county roads, estimated cost $414,000.
