Pennington County communities include: Ash, Box Elder, Castle Butte, Cedar Butte, Conata, Crooked Creek, Fairview, Flat Butte, Hill City, Hisega, Huron, Imlay, Keystone, Lake Creek, Moon, New Underwood, Owanka, Quinn, Rapid City and Rapid Valley, Rockerville, Scenic, Sunnyside, Shyne, Wall and Wasta.

Located just east of Rapid City is Ellsworh Air Force Base, home to the 28th Bomb Wing and the B-1B Lancer aircraft.
