According to the Centers for Disease Control, since 2002 South Dakota has had 1356 confirmed cases of WNV and 17 deaths due to WNV.
West Nile Virus. a mosquito-borne infection, can potentially cause serious diseases. These diseases include such things as a mild flu-like illness, encephalitis, meningitis, West Nile fever and poliomyelitis.
While people are at risk of contracting WNV in Pennington County, not every mosquito carries the West Nile Virus and most people who contract the disease do not become ill. However, due to the seriousness of the diseases it may cause, it is important to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
